Mt. Meru is the second highest mountain in Tanzania, at 4,566m and one of Africa’s most beautiful volcanoes. It is overshadowed by Kilimanjaro, its famous neighbour, and frequently overlooked by its visitors. Meru is a spectacular mountain; the trek involves beautiful hiking through the grassland and forest on the mountain’s lower slopes, followed by a dramatic and exhilarating and sometimes tough walk to the summit. The summit is reached by a narrow, barren ridge which provides stunning views of the ash cone. Mt. Kilimanjaro can also be seen in the background. The other highlight of this route is the variety of wildlife that can be seen. Elephant, black and white colobus monkeys, buffalo, and baboon, are a few to name. Overnight is in dormitory style huts.
