Tips
The pack that the porters carry is limited to 15 kg (35 pounds).
Store electronics in sealed water-proof bags (double sealed if possible).
Wrap clothing in plastic bags.
In the day pack, take along water, camera, binoculars, rain pants and jacket at a minimum. Add any other items you might need during the day because you may not see the porters until the end of your trek for that day.

Footwear
Be sure to break in your shoes before the hike.
Take trekking shoes for hiking during the day, preferrably warm (leather), waterproof, and with ankle-support.
Take tennis shoes or sandals for lounging in the evening.
Gaitors.
Hiking socks.
Wool socks.

Clothing
Your inner layer should be warm therefore preferably no cotton. Next layer should be insulating and warm, and the top layer should be water proof but breathable. Kilimanjaro may be on the Equator, but the temperature can drop drastically.
We recommend that you wear shorts for first and last days, and pants for hiking and for lounging during the evenings.
Short-sleeved t-shirts for first and last days only.
Long-sleeved shirts for hiking and for lounging during the evenings.
Long underwear.
Fleece jacket or wool sweater.
Fleece pants.
Down jacket.
Rain jacket, needed in hot rainforest and cold snow.
Rain pants, needed in hot rainforest and cold snow.
Underwear.
Sport bras, for women.
Warm mittens and/or gloves (waterproof).
Wool or pile hat.
Balaclava or neck gaitor.
Crampons (may be needed March-May and November-December).

Baggage
Day pack, for you to carry.
Large waterproof duffel bag or backpack, for porters to carry.
Plastic bags.

Sleeping
Sleeping bag (-10 degrees F is recommended).
Sleeping pad and repair kit.
Tents are supplied by AMEG LODGE KILIMANJARO at no charge.
Foam sleeping pads are provided by AMEG LODGE KILIMANJARO at no charge.

Toiletries
Toilet paper.
Small towel.
Soap.
Toothbrush and toothpaste.
Handi-wipes.

Documents
Passport.
Yellow fever certificate.
Tanzania visa.
Medical insurance.
Address book.

First Aid
Ibuprofen.
Bandaids.
Sunscreen (SPF 15+).
Malaria pills.
Insect repellent.
Lip balm with sunscreen.

Water bottles (2+).
Get 3 lits. of bottled water before the trip. Guides will boil water for you along the route. Some people still bring a water filter to enhance the taste. You may want an insulated water bottle to keep it from freezing on the last day.
Sun hat.
Sunglasses.
Money (small Tanzanian bills for trek and travellers cheques for rest of trip).
Ski or trekking poles.
Headlamp or flashlight.
Camera, film, mini-tripod.
Video camera, tapes.
Maps, guidebooks.
Batteries - bring extra sets for headlamp/flashlight and camera as cold weather shortens battery life.
Binoculars.
Notebook, pencil and pen.
